Day one Wii U buyers are being confronted with a huge mandatory firmware update which has left some users with a bricked console, numerous sources are reporting.
The update is said to be 5GB in size and is taking over an hour to download – obviously dependent on internet speeds and server load. Some users have reported the update taking so long to download that they’ve had to power off their Wii U mid-update only for the system to be bricked when returning power to the console.
“Warning: don’t unplug your Wii U during the 2 hour plus software update or the console stops working,” Tweeted Ben Fritz of the LA Times.
GTTV’s Geoff Keighley also warned of the large download, stating on Twitter: “The Wii U firmware update is apparently about 5 gigs. No wonder it takes about an hour+ to download.”
Not only are some users being left with broken consoles, but the large update is also filling the limited storage found on the 8GB models, making it impossible to install Nintendo Land.
Wii U will launch in the UK on November 30.
