First the Wii had no region locking, then it did, and now it appears the restrictions won’t apply only to Wii games. Nintendo UK has confirmed that GameCube games will be governed by the same region locking that is in place on the CameCube console, and there’s bad news for Virtual Console titles too.

According to Nintendo, Wii Virtual Console releases will not be universal, suggesting we’ll only see releases in their original form for each territory, perhaps even complete with PAL slowdown and borders – although this hasn’t been confirmed.

The Wii goes on sale in Europe from December 8, and news of continued poor treatment for European gamers could see many switch to importing a US Wii.
