After the hugely stock limited launch of the PlayStation 3 on Friday, it was the Wii’s turn to take centre stage as it became the last next-gen console to launch in North America. The heart of the launch was held at Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square, New York, where those lining up to get their hands on the Wii were treated to a drumming DJ, acrobats and Wii demo pods.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was at the store to provide a crowd pleasing address and also partook in some Wii Sports Tennis with an MTV host. The president famous for kickin’ ass and takin’ names was also present to hand over the first Wii at 12:01am.
Only a few blocks away, hardened Nintendo fans were lining up at the Nintendo World Store for their Wii – despite the fact that the store would not be opening until 8am.
In contrast to the PS3 launch, it appeared that the majority of those lining up were there because they really wanted to play the Wii, and not because they saw it as an opportunity to make a quick buck on eBay.
Nintendo expects to ship four million Wii units worldwide by the year end, with the Japanese and European launches to follow shortly in December.
