Nintendo of America has announced the October 20 release date for Wii Music in the Americas. Just as Wii Sports introduced new players to the world of video games and Wii Fit got more people interested in fitness, Nintendo hopes Wii Music will enable people to experience music like never before.

Players will be able to improvise ‘jams’ on the fly with more than 60 instruments, such as the electric guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, steel drums, marimba and sitar. Once an instrument is selected players need only move their Wii Remote and Nunchuck as though playing the real thing and Wii Music will turn this into great music.

In addition to jamming, budding musicians will be able to play along to more than 50 songs from a variety of genres including popular, licensed, classical and Nintendo songs.

Performances can also be shared with friends using the Wii Message boards. Record a song how you like and send it to a friend. They can then add their own spin and send it back.

Other modes include the ability to command an orchestra, with players having to wave the Wii Remote controller like a conductor’s baton to lead a Mii orchestra through orchestrated music. Play the handbells game where players will swing the controllers to play two handbells as part of a larger ensemble. A tone quiz will also be available and will include challenges like putting note-playing Miis in order from lowest to highest pitch.

Perhaps the most interesting game mode in Wii Music is the virtual drum set. This mode also uses the Wii Balance Board which becomes virtual pedals to compliment your virtual drumsticks.

Wii Music will be released for Wii in the Americas on October 20. At this time no European release date has been announced.
