The Wii has got off to a record breaking start in Australia, replacing the Xbox 360 as the fastest selling video game console ever. According to data trackers GfK Australia, 32,091 Wii console units were sold in system’s first four days on sale – setting a new record in Australia.

Previous fastest sellers include the Xbox 360 with 30,421 units and the PSP before that with 27,055 units sold. The Wii was so dominant in its release week that Wii console sales accounted for 43% of all hardware sales in Australia.

Software sales are also reportedly doing well, with an attach rate of 1.5 games for every console sold. GfK senior account manager Daniel Morse said: “New consoles generally get an attach rate of 1.5 to 2, but you have to take into account that the Wii was bundled with a game,” and did not count towards the attach rate.

The Wii’s success in Australia follows impressive launches in the Americas where some 600,000 units were sold in eight days, in Japan where 400,000 units sold out in a few days, and in Europe, where a record smashing start saw 325,000 units sold in just two days.
