The New York Times reports that Nintendo of America chief marketing officer, Reggie Fils-Aime, has revealed that publishers need to sell one million units of a Wii game in order to turn a profit.
While Fils-Aime pointed out that this figure is lower than the figure required on other consoles, NPD stats reveal that only 16 out of 486 games on Wii have reached this figure, nine of which are made by Nintendo.
The New York Times article also points out that analysts have said the majority of games sell no more than 150,000 units and that the cost of making a game, excluding marketing, has risen from $10 million in the previous generation to a typical $25 million.
This rise in development cost is one of the reasons Nintendo chose not to feature high definition capabilities on the Wii, Fils-Aime noting that it makes Wii games cheaper to make.
