Consumer demand for the Wii is holding strong with the latest sales data from America putting the Wii firmly in the hot seat as the best selling video game console. The NPD Group reports Wii sales for the month of February of 335,000 units.

We’re gratified that the explosive appeal of Wii, in terms of both new players and new ways to play, has created unprecedented demand, substantially beyond supply,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. “But we also understand that there are hundreds of thousands of consumers still waiting to get their hands on the system so we continue to both ship more units to retail every week and work non-stop to build capacity.

The Nintendo DS also continues to boss the market, shifting 485,000 units over the month. Combined Wii and DS sales account for 54% of all hardware sales in February. Software sales across both platforms are also strong, with three of the top four selling games for February (Wii Play, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Diddy Kong Racing) being exclusive to Nintendo platforms.

Meanwhile the Xbox 360 continues to sell steadily with a further 228,000 units sold, while the PlayStation 3 is way behind the competition with only 127,000 units sold during the month. The PSP only managed around a third of Nintendo DS sales with 176,000 units.
