Because of the game’s entirely different environment, fans of the franchise are naturally curious about the era that the game takes place in. If this is a question that you similarly had in mind, then we’ve got you covered.
Here’s what we know about the period that Like A Dragon: Ishin! is set in.
What period does Like A Dragon: Ishin! take place?
Like A Dragon: Ishin! takes place in the Edo period of Japan during the 1860s. This era derived its name simply from Edo, which is the former name of the city of Tokyo.
Since this is set during an early timeline in the history of Japan, most of the technology, weapons, and culture that’s present in the Yakuza series is predictably absent in the game. The equipment that’s often used by the protagonist consists of samurai garb and weaponry, such as the katana. However, the main character, Sakamoto Ryoma, also frequently makes use of a firearm, like a revolver, in combat.

Though the names of all of the characters have been changed to reflect the different time period, their appearances have largely remained the same. Sakamoto Ryoma, the protagonist, has the same features as that of Kazuma Kiryu, the main character of the initial Yakuza titles.
Other individuals, such as Okita Soji and Nagakura Shinpachi, similarly have their own counterparts as they are represented by Goro Majima and Taiga Saejima in the Yakuza series respectively.
