More than a quarter of 3DS owners feel that the stereoscopic effect detracts from gameplay, according to a new study.

US research firm Interpret conducted a study of 1600 people in May this year. Of those who were familiar with the console, only 22 per cent felt that 3D effect improved gameplay; 28 per cent said that it actively detracted from the experience, while 13 per cent said that they always played with 3D off.

Over half the respondents (56 per cent) said that their ideal 3D gaming setup involved a home console and 3D TV, while only 7 per cent said that they would prefer to use a handheld machine.

The survey also suggests that Nintendo is still struggling to reach consumers with their advertising. While 60 per cent of those questioned said they were familiar with the machine, only 28 per cent knew that the 3DS doesn’t require the use of glasses.

The study, as reported by Gamespot, was revealed at the 3D gaming summit in LA.

Nintendo must be beginning to tire of these surveys. A survey revealed at the start of August found that a third of Japanese gamers regret their purchase.
