inXile Entertainment’s Kickstarter project for Wasteland 2 has closed on a huge $2,933,197, approximately $2 million more than the initial funding target of $900,000. Add the PayPal donations of $110,703 and that’s over $3 million.
Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to the first ever post-apocalyptic computer RPG. The original Wasteland was the inspiration for the Fallout series of games, and the first RPG to allow players to split parties for tactical considerations, to face players with moral choices, and to make them deal with the consequences of their actions.
The game received 61,289 backers, pledging anything from $15 (32,778 backers) all the way up to $10,000 which was donated by 12 people.
With all the extra funding the project has been able to expand its scope, including making the game world bigger, a more complex storyline, and the addition of development talent from the closed Obsidian Entertainment, including Interplay veteran Chris Avellone.
Wasteland 2 has an estimated delivery date of October 2013.
