Warner Bros. is understood to be in the early stages of developing a reboot of The Matrix, sources have told The Hollywood Reporter.

Iconic 1999 sci-fi film The Matrix was a huge success for Warner Bros., even though its two sequels failed to live up to the original film’s acclaim.

Warner is believed to be in talks with Zak Penn to write a treatment for the franchise reboot. Penn is best known for this work on a range of Marvel movies, and has also worked on the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.

Sources also note there is interest from Warner in bringing Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fantastic 4) on board as the movie’s star.

It’s thought Warner may approach The Matrix in the same way Disney has delved into Star Wars to create new stories from within the universe – Rogue One, Young Han Solo. THR suggests a story focussing on a young Morpheus could be on the cards.

The Matrix reboot will be a project which needs to overcome a number of hurdles if it is to progress, including working out what kind of involvement original filmmakers the Wachowskis and producer Joel Silver will have in the project.
