The rampant success of Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is unparalleled, not just for developer Saber Interactive but also Id Software veteran Tim Willits. Now CCO of Saber, the Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein developer has never seen success like this.
Space Marine 2 trounces DOOM
While some fans have minor complaints regarding the latest Warhammer game, such as unbalanced classes and a lack of customisation for some chapters, the game is universally beloved.
In a post on Twitter, Saber Interactive’s Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits explained that the new Warhammer game’s success is unprecedented in his career.
Despite working on industry defining games such as Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake, Space Marine 2 is selling at a pace he’s never seen before.
“Todd Hollenshead (former CEO of id Software) and I believe that Space Marine 2 is the fastest selling game we’ve ever worked on, including all the Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and RAGE games over the years,” Willits said on Twitter.
A legacy to behold
Of course, the new Warhammer 40k is a newborn release, and it likely won’t ever reach the lifetime sales of Id Software’s DOOM. After all, the classic PC first-person shooter has been ported everywhere possible for the past three decades.
However, with Willits’ last game in the series being DOOM Eternal, it shows just how much of a success Space Marine 2 really is. While Warhammer is a popular franchise, its video game sales have never rivaled AAA releases. Until now, that is.
With years of additional content planned for the game’s PvP deathmatch and co-op Operations mode, fans are eating well. Sure, an FoV slider may never come to the game officially, but more missions are on the way for Season Pass holders.
Alongside the new game, Warhammer is having a resurgence in popularity. As Amazon makes a push to bring the dense sci-fi franchise to live-action, a wave of fresh Warhammer fans are likely to follow the series well into the future.
