Relic Entertainment’s RTS remaster Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Enhanced Edition has managed to sell over 150,000 copies in just a single day. The upgraded form of the more than two-decade-old RTS has launched to mostly positive reviews and a helluva lot of sales.

Launched with a 30% price discount for owners of the previous version of the game, fans of the iconic RTS have arrived in droves to pick up the new remaster.

Dawn of War sells 150,000 copies in a single day

Announced to fans on Twitter, Relic Entertainment confirmed that the game sold 150,000 copies in 24 hours. Released on August 14th, it’s been four days since launch at the time of writing, but Relic has not released updated sales figures.

While the game has launched to mostly positive reviews, there are some issues with the game. One of the biggest issues with the game is the AI upscaled artwork that is used across the entire game. While some of the art has been touched up by human hands (read our Making Of interview for more), there are some pretty rough visuals that pop up.

“Let’s be honest, it’s a low effort remaster with AI scaled textures, even if the game is still as awesome as it was back then,” one negative review reads on Steam.

Nevertheless, there are major upgrades to the Warhammer 40,000 RTS. With the entire game moved from 32-bit to 64-bit, the game is now able to make use of significiantly more RAM for the game’s still-active modding communtiy, with one player already able to spawn over 47,000 Orks without crashing the game. Combined with improved pathing for every unit in the game, it’s considerably nicer to play even with the weird visuals.

At the end of the day, yes, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Enhanced Edition is a mixed bag, but it’s also still one of the best RTS games ever released. Additionally, as a remaster of the game that brought hundreds of thousands of gamers into the Warhammer universe for the first time, it’s worth picking up even if the art is a tad mushy. (Modders are probably hand-drawing 4K replacements as we speak, to be honest.)
