Gaijin Entertainment has confirmed that light cruisers will be joining War Thunder's expanding lineup of naval forces.

As expected, this ship class is able to unleash some pretty destructive firepower, and ranks among the most powerful forces the jack-of-all-trades combat MMO has up its sleeves. Light cruisers are huge, lumbering beasts that are described as the 'centerpiece' of any battle, and a pretty major responsibility for budding captains.

Players will be able to get behind the wheel of two cruisers in the game: The British HMS Enterprise and the Italian Bartolomeo Colleoni. The former possesses pretty decent armour and is capable of reaching speeds of 33 knots, plus comes packing seven 152mm cannons and anti-aircraft defences. You really don't want to be in front of this thing when it goes off.

The Italian cruiser meanwhile is even more of a beast, offering eight 152mm cannons, six 100mm long range cannons, and can travel at a speed of 37 knots. Despite this, it can't take as much punishment as HMS Enterprise, boasting only 24mm of armour in comparison to the British vessel's 76.4mm shell, while its anti-aircraft defences are not quite as robust either.

Light cruisers excel a pounding the enemy from a distance while being able to soak up plenty of damage themselves, though they'll still need protecting from smaller members of the fleet and are especially susceptible to enemy torpedo attack.

War Thunder is available on PlayStation 4 and PC as a free to play title.
