The upcoming Nintendo Switch version of Virtua Racing, which is part of the Sega Ages brand, will feature multiplayer support for up to eight players via local split-screen.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine (via Gematsu), the retro racer will arrive in Japan this spring (and presumably in the west soon after), and also features online-based one-on-one battles. Here, your opponent's status is displayed via picture-in-picture.

As for the local multiplayer, Virtua Racing will give you the option of setting five-lap and 20-lap race rules. And yes, all eight players can duke it out on the same screen; that's double the usual four-player antics.

Virtua Racing is an all-time classic from Sega. It came out way back in 1992 for arcades, and eventually turned up on multiple consoles, including the Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis), 32X, and Sega Saturn.

The game was designed by Yu Suzuki, who later went on to helm the Shenmue series, and is one of the most influential titles of all time due to its then-pioneering 3D visuals.
