US users have spent 24 per cent more on free-to-play MMO games this year compared to 2010, according to a report by market analysis firm NewZoo.

The firm also predicts $1.2 billion will be spent on F2P MMOs this year alone.

Additionally, 47 per cent of spending comes from the US compared to last year’s 39 per cent.

The company’s CEO Peter Warman warned that the future of MMOs depends on expanding to new markets and platforms, Gamasutra reports.

“Recent lay-offs and the sudden death of Lego Universe are serious warnings for the MMO games industry. Success will also strongly depend on how MMO companies extend their unique gameplay and IP across other game platforms, specifically mobile.”

LEGO announced its plans to shut down its MMO LEGO Universe and let go of 115 employees earlier this month, becoming one of many MMOs to shut down this year.
