Backwards compatibility was the thorn in Microsoft’s Xbox 360 crown, and it looks like Sony is also having some issues with its PS3 backwards compatibility offering. Although the majority of PS2 and PS1 titles work without problem, there are a handful of titles that for one reason or another either fail to work or have problems when played on the PS3.

For this reason, Sony has made available an easy to use backwards compatibility checker, which with a simple search will tell you if the game you want to play will work with your brand spanking new PS3.

Sony says that around 200 PS2/PS1 titles don’t work with the PS3, but is making an effort to reduce this number with updates to the PS3 software. However you look at it, the situation is still far rosier than that of the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility – functionality Microsoft seemingly updates when it sees fit. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility does offer a visual upgrade to Xbox titles, something the PS3 does not offer to PS2 and PS1 games.
