A fan-made Tomb Raider mini-series is being made by actor/director Stephen Lunsford, the man who wrote and directed a number of Tomb Raider shorts to coincide with the launch of Tomb Raider in 2013.
The new series will act as a prequel to next year’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and the upcoming movie.
“I’m happy to announce that I will be creating a #TombRaider mini-series to be released with Rise of The Tomb Raider,” wrote Lunsford. “This will act as a prequel to the game and eventual movie. We are currently in pre-production and working hard to make sure this becomes the best live-action iteration of Lara Croft yet. Thank you to Crystal Dynamics for all of your support and I can’t wait to make this a reality. I will have updates as the project progresses.”
He later clarified his announcement: “Let me re-phrase. This is not an officially licensed Tomb Raider production. This is currently a unofficial production created by fans for the fans of the Tomb Raider franchise. We are however working with Crystal Dynamics to bring the most accurate representation of the character and the Tomb Raider universe! Looking to film this May! Will update soon.”
Crystal Dynamics community manager Meagan Marie also took to the publisher’s forums to make it clear the series isn’t official.
“Hey guys! Jumping in to clarify – this is just a fan series,” she wrote. “Stephen and Cambria [Edwards] are huge fans of Lara and Tomb Raider and are whipping something awesome up to pay tribute. We’re happy to promote and give the project love just as we do with any other fan film!”
Rise of the Tomb Raider is due to release in holiday 2015 on Xbox One and Xbox 360.
