A new Warhammer RPG video game has been killed three years into development. Created by a team of 60 developers, the unannounced project has been scrapped as its publisher decided to cut funding.

Despite Warhammer owner Games Workshop hoping to see more big successes in the franchise, and the huge success of Space Marine 2 last year, the secret Warhammer game has been left on the cutting room floor.

Secret Warhammer RPG cancelled

In development by new team Thought Pennies, the cancelled Warhammer RPG was created by a “fully remote role-playing game studio creating games with social storytelling”.

Via MP1ST, Thought Pennies chief creative officer Daniel Erickson explained that the team working on the project “never missed a milestone, our feedback was great, our partnerships strong”. Nevertheless, the game’s publisher left the developer high and dry after three years of development.

“We went from two people and a PowerPoint to a team of almost sixty heavily-vetted, incredibly independent, passionate professionals,” Erickson said. “Our publisher changed strategic direction, however, and our previous project is now without funding.”

Multiple developers that worked on the project have since revealed that the game was based on the Warhammer franchise. The game would’ve been a “co-op PvE action RPG with a cast of unique heroes and playstyles” that had live-service elements with additional content releasing after launch.

With the massive popularity of both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 in recent years, it seems like a shame to abandon a promising project three years into its development. However, with the shocking state of live-service games these days, such as the failure of Concord, the massive player drought of Destiny 2 and more, there is more worry surrounding the genre.

Hopefully, the team behind the unannounced Warhammer RPG will be able to secure funding in the future. With the team forced to downsize and their project scrapped, the future does not look bright.
