When Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were announced in June, many people were surprised that the two games were for the older 3DS and not for Nintendo’s shiny new Switch console. The Pokémon developer, Game Freak, has now shed some light on why Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are coming to the 3DS family of consoles, and it’s said that the two games will be the last in the series for the diminutive handheld.

Speaking to IGN, Game Freak’s director, Shigeru Ohmori said that ‘with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out.’ Ohmori continued, stating that, ‘we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system.’

It was also revealed that only half of the staff were working on Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and while Ohmori didn’t specify exactly what the rest of Game Freak has been working on, it’s safe to assume it’s the mainline Pokémon game for Nintendo Switch that was announced at E3 2017.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will be released for the Nintendo 3DS console family on November 17.
