Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers for Nintendo Switch will feature a first-person mini-game in which players hold the Joy-Con controllers in each hand to perform gestures to activate in-game moves.

All the new motion tech inside the Joy-Cons means this will be one of the best motion-controlled experiences we’ve seen to date, right? Wrong, at least according to the first footage of the mode released by Capcom.

As Ryu you’ll push the controllers forward to fire out a fireball, do a one-handed uppercut to perform a Dragon Punch, and move the controllers from side to side to pull off a hurricane kick. The problem is that there appears to be a great deal of lag associated with the motion controls, and that’s only when the game correctly recognises the motion.

Thankfully this is only a mini-game, with the core 2D fighting hopefully providing a much more satisfying experience.

  • Features a stellar line-up of characters, including all the original fighters and bosses, the characters added in Super Street Fighter II, plus new additions Evil Ryu and Violent Ken!
  • Choose between classic pixel-art graphics for a retro nostalgia trip, or enjoy a refined new modern look!
  • Use the Joy-Con to challenge a second player anytime, anywhere. Pull off flashy super combos and show your opponent who the strongest is around!
  • In addition to versus action, you can now team up with a friend to take on a CPU opponent!

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers will launch later this year only for Nintendo Switch.
