Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shot to the top of the All Formats All Prices UK video game chart with sales just shy of two million units, ChartTrack reports.

Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim proved there is room at the top for two, with the high-profile sequel becoming the publisher’s biggest ever launch and the fifth highest of the year so far, just behind Gears of War 3.

All the excitement at the top means Battlefield 3 takes a 62 per cent drop to No.3, followed by FIFA 12 and Just Dance 3 at No.5 – the latter actually recording a sales boost of 18 per cent.

Sony’s Uncharted 3 saw sales dive 72 per cent, enough to see the title tumble from No.2 to No.6, while Mind Candy’s Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo is new at No.7. Batman: Arkham City is at No.8, Zumba remains strong at No.9 and Wii Party is back into the Top 10 at No.10.

This week – 2011’s Week 45 – is also the biggest ever for revenue: £120.8 million, which outdoes that of Week 45 2010 which made £113.8 million.

After such a huge week for new releases there’s no rest in sight with a possibly the busiest week of the year for new games ahead of us. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations looks favourite to claim the No.1 spot, but will face intense competition from Saints Row: The Third, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D Land, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, Halo: Combat Evolved – Anniversary and Need for Speed: The Run.

With so many high profile titles hitting store shelves – plus the likes of Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Battlefield 3 and FIFA 12 still demanding shelf space – there could be several triple-A failures this holiday season. Which games do you think will flop?
