With a sales boost of 53% Call of Duty 4 was the runaway Christmas No.1, almost 35,000 units clear of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed. It’s the first year EA has missed out on claiming the Xmas No.1 since 2002 when Rockstar Games’ GTA Vice City was popular in Santa’s sack.

Pre-race favourite Need for Speed: ProStreet never looked likely to live up to its hype and managed only fifth place despite a 12% increase in sales. A best ever week for Wii hardware sales also ensured a 148% increase in sales for Wii Play, sneaking into tenth place.
