The arrival of new consoles has resulted in a bumper year for hardware sales, up 34 percent on 2004’s 2.8 million units, with a total of 3.75 million units sold. Revenues saw a massive 222 percent leap from £93m in 2004 to a staggering £300m in 2005.

The top selling console for the year was the PlayStation 2, shifting 1.2 million units – a figure that should come as no great shock to anyone. The new handhelds on the block have also faired well with the DS managing to sell 800,000 units followed by the PSP’s 795,000. Although the DS appears to have come out ever so slightly on-top, bear in mind that the PSP was released some six months after the DS.

In its first month on sale the Xbox 360 managed to sell only 129,000 units, a figure that would have surely been much higher had Microsoft been able to meet the demand for the console. The Xbox managed 260,000 over the year and the Game Boy Advance SP only 63,000.

2006 looks likely to be another great year for console launches, with the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Revolution expected to enter the next-generation market.
