French publishing giant Ubisoft has announced that it plans to greatly expand its’ Montreal division over the next five years, offering millions of pounds of investment and up to 1,000 new jobs into the region.

The division, which has made its’ name based on top-notch titles such as the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Splinter Cell, is already the largest of the Company’s studios (Ubisoft also has offices in Shanghai and Orlando), already employing around 1,000 people.

It is not just Montreal that is increasing, though; recruitment at both the Shanghai and Orlando offices continues at a pace, in a bid to bulk-up the internal development capacity of the Company.

In an industry where we are forever reading of studios and development teams closing down, it is refreshing to see a large publisher making a commitment to the industry. And, if nothing else, it will hopefully give global-behemoth EA some stiffer competition, which hopefully will result in better games. Good times ahead.
