The in development Twisted Metal game for PS3 began life as a downloadable title for PSN, Eat Sleep Play boss David Jaffe has revealed.

Asked by IGN about the pressure of making big budget games, Jaffe said: “This Twisted Metal started as a PSN game. Sony is the one that came to us and said they wanted more; they liked what they were seeing and wanted to make it into a full retail product.”

He added; “We actually went from PSN-only, and then we were going to be like Warhawk and SOCOM Confrontation in terms of it was going to be a $39 product that was multi-player only, and then Sony’s like ‘No no, they want the stories’ and marketing’s like ‘Yeah, you guys don’t realise how many fans love the Twisted Metal universe, you gotta give us the stories.’ We weren’t going back to Sony begging for more money to make this bigger. They wanted it bigger and of course we wanted to do that.”

Twisted Metal is scheduled for release this year for PS3.

We weren’t sold on Twisted Metal when it was unveiled at E3 last year, but given the series’ heritage and Jaffe’s pedigree it would be unfair to write it off at such an early stage. Everything looked a little rough around the edges, but that’s something that another 12-months and more in development can put right.
