Utilising double XP tokens in Black Ops 6 is a surefire way for you to climb the ranks and reach the next Prestige as fast as possible. Following the Season 1 update launch for Treyarch’s 2024 release, players quickly noticed the ability to use their tokens earned from previous games.

The ability to level up fast makes the grind through the levels much easier. Shortly after discovering the change, the developer decided to change its mind and lock the legacy XP tokens much to the annoyance of fans. In a bid to restore order, Treyarch revealed why it had chosen to make the decision in the first place.

Why did Treyarch block double XP tokens?

On November 16, 2024 following widespread community backlash, the Black Ops 6 developer released a statement explaining the decision to stop players using their hard-earned XP tokens.

With the start of Season 1, a UI bug allowed players to activate legacy XP tokens in Black Ops 6. Unfortunately, it also introduces some potential risk to game stability.

Treyarch

While the ability to use your XP tokens collected from Warzone and Modern Warfare 3 is hugely advantageous, any kind of compromise to the stability of the game is a risk. Treyarch patching the use of XP tokens is certainly frustrating but a decision that’s justified if further issues could’ve impacted other areas of the game.

Will legacy XP tokens return to Black Ops 6?

If you’re still hoping you can use those tokens at some point during the Black Ops 6 cycle, there’s good news. In addition to explaining why tokens can’t be used, the developer also acknowledged the huge uproar generated by its decision.

Treyarch added: “We realise how much players appreciate being able to redeem legacy XP tokens in both BO6 and Warzone, so we are currently testing a way to implement this change correctly in a future update.” As a result, you’ll have the ability to activate tokens at any time which is great news if you don’t fancy working your way through the entire battle pass quickly.

Initially, the decision to remove legacy double XP tokens from Black Ops 6 looked to be a huge backward step. Now, it’s great to see Treyarch acknowledge player feedback and explain its decision rather than leaving everyone in the dark and frustrated with yet another Call of Duty developer.
