Update: Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will be released in June to compliment the motion picture, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Activision has announced.

The game is billed as a follow-up to this summer’s movie and the games War For Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, telling the story of the hunt for the Dark Spark, an ancient relic as powerful as the Matrix of Leadership.

In the game players will be able to switch between the Autobots and the Decepticons, choosing from 40 different characters.

Multiplayer also returns including fan favourite Escalation, delivering wave-based, survival-style gameplay for up to four players online cooperatively. There’s also new, upgradeable defense systems, recognisable adversaries from the lore, and an expanded roster of playable characters from past and present.

A new levelling system also promises to turn single-player and multiplayer into one unified and persistent character development path.

Original story: Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is in development for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC and 3DS.

The confirmation came during Hasbro’s presentation at the NYC Toy Fair, and a trailer has been posted by IGN.

Furthermore, the Examiner reports that the new game is in development at Edge of Reality, not High Moon Studios (War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron). WayForward is said to be in charge of the 3DS version.

It isn’t yet known what High Moon Studios is working on instead.

Dark Spark will merge the Cybertron universe with the Michael Bay movie universe.
