Sega has announced that Total War: Rome II's Rise of the Republic expansion will launch on August 9.

Rise of the Republic acts as a prequel to the main campaign, taking place in the year 399 BC, at a time when Rome was poised for greatness. Things aren't all hunky-dory for the empire however, as its very existence is teetering precariously on a knife's edge.

The expansion depicts the events that lead up to the Second Founding of Rome and beyond, offering a new campaign for players to tuck into, featuring the landmass of Italy and its surrounding areas.

Rise of the Republic also introduces nine new playable factions, among which includes Rome, the great state-city of Syracuse, and Senones' Gallic tribe. In addition, special bonuses for your chosen faction can be activated thanks to the new Government Actions ability, with region-specific dilemmas also cropping up that you must deal with, all plucked from the annals of history.

In addition to the expansion, Total War: Rome II will also see the launch of the Ancestral update, which adds the Family Tree feature to all campaigns. The update is currently in Open Beta, and will be released alongside Rise of the Republic next month.
