Tony Hawk: Shred, the second Activision published skateboarding game to utilise a board peripheral, sold approximately 270,000 copies worldwide in 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter added that Tony Hawk Ride, the first game to utilise the board controller, has sold over 1.3 million copies in the US since its launch in fall 2009.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft’s effort in the skateboarding space didn’t manage to replicate the success found in the snowboarding genre. Shaun White Skateboarding is reported to have shifted an estimated 120,000 copied worldwide in 2010, compared to over three million copies of the extreme sports star’s snowboarding games.

Tony Hawk used to be a huge brand for Activision, but the publisher’s decision to re-target the franchise at a younger audience doesn’t appear to have revitalised sales in a market Pachter believes can support 3-4 million sales annually.

Shred doesn’t look likely to better the performance of Ride, leaving Activision with a decision to make regarding the future direction of its Tony Hawk games. Ubisoft is probably better off sticking to snowboarding.
