We are all eagerly awaiting the next Tomb Raider video game. The last AAA adventure we got starring Lara Croft was Shadow of the Tomb Raider all the way back in 2018. We have been gifted two remastered trilogies since then, but fans are understandably pining for Crystal Dynamics’ next installment. There’s very little we officially know about TR12, but the next Tomb Raider video game has received a small update amidst the recent layoffs at Crystal Dynamics, meanwhile, Sophie Turner has promised fans Lara Croft is in “ very safe hands” after being cast as the British trailblazer for Amazon Prime’s TV series.

Crystal Dynamics layoffs provide small update for new Tomb Raider video game

Unfortunately, on LinkedIn at the tailend of August, Crystal Dynamics announced news of further layoffs at the studio. The statement said Crystal Dynamics “made the very difficult decision to part ways with a number of our talented colleagues as the result of evolving business conditions”.

While the decision of layoffs was “not made lightly,” it was necessary to “ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market”.

Naturally, some players have worried about the future of the Tomb Raider series and the next game because of the layoffs and how Perfect Dark was recently cancelled by Microsoft. Fortunately, Crystal Dynamics’ statement provides a small update on “the future of Tomb Raider,” confirming it is “unaffected” by the layoffs.

As for what we officially know about the next game, it is a unification of Lara Croft that will see her donning a classic-inspired outfit seen in crossovers with Dead By Daylight, Call of Duty, and many other IPs as part of collaborations. We also know Crystal Dynamics is developing it in Unreal Engine 5, and it will be published by Amazon Games.

Hopefully we will see something of the new Tomb Raider video game at The Game Awards in December. Fan are speculating that it could make an appearance, but this is wishful thinking rather than any hints from Crystal or Amazon.

Sophie Turner promises Lara Croft is in “safe hands” after Tomb Raider casting

Away from the new Tomb Raider video game currently in development, Sophie Turner’s long-rumored casting for the Amazon Prime TV series has been confirmed. Following the confirmation, Sophie Turner shared a statement relayed by the official TR Instagram account.

The Game of Thrones actress said, “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we [and Lara] are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we are cooking”.

The Phoebe referred to is Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She is the co-showrunner and writer of the Amazon series, and she is mostly known for Killing Eve as well as less flatteringly Indiana Jones 5.

In other Tomb Raider news, Embracer reports say Crystal Dynamics have brought in an “external partner” to aid with development of TR12.
