The BBC iPlayer service has now been fully discontinued on Wii U, Nintendo has announced. The on-demand and live TV app had been removed from the Nintendo eShop back on August 31.

The app’s disappearance is the result of an “end in the license agreement between the BBC and Nintendo”, though no reason for this was given. Perhaps it’s because very few people were using the service.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for enjoying the BBC iPlayer application on Wii U,” commented Nintendo.

If only Nintendo had a new system launching in the coming weeks which could also benefit from an iPlayer app. Non-gaming applications for Switch is an area which Nintendo is yet to really discuss, but you’d assume the usual suspects will be present.
