theHunter: Primal, a standalone dinosaur hunting experience from Avalanche Studios and its subsidiary Expansive Worlds, has launched today on Steam Early Access.

Although based on the popular free-to-play theHunter franchise, which has more than 4.5 million registered players, Primal is being offered as a one-time purchase game.

The game features a 24 kilometre squared Jurassic landscape which promises to push players to their limits in order to survive. The Early Access version features three deadly species from the Cretaceous period.

Utahraptor: A fast-moving, medium sized dinosaur that hunts in packs.

Triceratops: A lumbering tri-horned herbivore.

Tyrannosaurus Rex: A brutal six ton predator.

“theHunter: Primal is a new direction for Expansive Worlds,” said Christofer Sundberg, co-founder and chief creative officer at Avalanche Studios. “It fits perfectly within our portfolio and shows the true potential of the theHunter brand, a franchise we have been working on since 2009. Move over, undead people – dinosaurs are the new zombies.”

A full release is planned for March 2015.
