CD Projekt Red has become the latest developer to jump on the MOBA bandwagon with the announcement of free-to-play mobile title The Witcher: Battle Arena, due for release in Q4 2014.
With development of The Witcher 3 still well underway, the developer has enlisted the help of Fuero Games to help build Battle Arena, which will be a more streamlined MOBA experienced suited to mobile devices.
The game will feature eight characters from The Witcher universe at launch: the Witcher Letho of Gulet,The Operator, sorceress Philippa Eilhart, dwarven adventurer Zoltan Chivay, Golem, Eithne of Brokilon, Saskia of Aedirn and Iorveth.
In an interview with Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red has stressed the game will not be pay-to-win.
“It won’t be a free-to-play,” Tadek Zielinski said. “It will be a free game. A genuinely free game. You know we are fair with gamers. We are known for giving away stuff for free. We believe free is fair. So we wanted to realise our philosophy also with the MOBA game.”
Eurogamer notes that any items can be earned through time, while Zielinski goes on to add paying real money helps speed up the process.
“You will mostly pay for saving time,” he continues. “If you don’t want to farm for your hero you can buy him. And also there are vanity items you pay for. But there will be absolutely no pay to win elements in our game.
“We were actually approached by somebody who told us it’s wise to have pay-to-win in the game because it monetises better. But we said it’s an absolute no go. It’s against our policies. It’s against the philosophy we have at CD Projekt Red.”
