The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released in 2014 on PC and “all high-end platforms available”, CD Projekt Red has announced via Game Informer.
The generation leap brings open-world gameplay, with the player deciding where to go and what to do – gone are chapters and acts. It’s a big open-world too, said to be around 20 per cent larger than that found in Skyrim, and will take approximately 40 minutes to travel from one end to the other on horseback – with the promise that the new REDengine 3 will eliminate loading.
Geralt returns to protect the world from his arch nemesis, fighting to be reunited with the red-haired sorceress Yennefer. The main storyline, described as more personal than the political tones of The Witcher 2, will be supported by optional quests, with your success or failure affecting the game world.
“We decided that we were ready for the next step,” said studio head Adam Badowski. “We decided to combine two types of games. We mastered storytelling in RPG games – that’s our strongest side. On the other hand, we feel that we missed something. We missed the huge freedom of open-world games like Skyrim.”
The Wild Hunt subtitle comes from multi-dimensional spectral riders which steal human children for evil purposes. It was The Hunt which caused Geralt and subsequently Yennefer’s amnesia, and whilst Geralt has all but recovered, the location of his lost love remains unknown.
