Wii U has been put back on life support this week with the release of a new retro-flavoured shooter, Shadow Archery, courtesy of independent developer Ultra Dolphin Rev.

Clearly determined to claw back some attention like an ageing rock band wobbling through a reunion tour, Wii U’s latest game sees players shooting a bunch of spider-like creatures as a silver-haired Elf, who looks a bit like Legolas’ evil twin. Shadow Archery gives you a few control options; you can plump for the standard game pad or use a Wii Remote to eliminate your targets.

The best bit? It’ll cost you bugger all for its first week on sale, and just $0.99 thereafter. A US release is planned for this week while the UK and European launch will roll out soon after, though a price has yet to be confirmed.

The Wii U was released in 2012 but failed to emulate the success of its multi-million selling predecessor, although to be fair it did have some cracking first-party titles despite third-party support dwindling in its first few years.Â
