The Secret World’s December relaunch as a buy-to-play game – dropping the need for a subscription – has been a success, developer Funcom has announced.

Activity levels in the game have increased by over 400 per cent thanks to the return of lapsed players and 70,000 new players who purchased the game in the last four weeks. Funcom says this 70,000 represents close to a 30 per cent increase in total sales, which by my calculations means life-to-date sales for the MMO stand at approximately 300,000 copies.

The move to a free-to-play model is all part of the firm’s ongoing restructuring around its core products and technology.

“We are building the basis of a very sustainable business” said Ole Schreiner, CEO of Funcom.”With a restructured organisation, we will have a joint team of the best-of-the-best working together to expand our existing online worlds and to create new, exciting and memorable online experiences such as our upcoming LEGO Minifigures game.”

The new organisation plans to be better equipped to realize the strategy of building smaller high quality MMO titles.
