Microsoft has confirmed that production of the original Xbox One has been stopped. Speaking to Glixel, an un-named Microsoft spokesperson said that, ‘As is typical for the console industry, we stopped manufacturing the original Xbox One when we introduced Xbox One S.’

This news follows on from previous reports that original Xbox One consoles were no longer available to buy from the Microsoft UK online store, so the official confirmation isn’t a huge surprise. You can still buy the Xbox One S, so there’s that, but good luck with getting your hands on the Xbox One X, pre-orders for the Scorpio Edition of the console sold out in record time.

The original Xbox One launched on November 22, 2013 at a pretty steep price point of £429. In comparison to the cheaper PS4, it was less powerful and £80 more, probably as a result of each console coming with a Kinect camera. This changed when the Kinect stopped being bundled in 2014.

The Xbox One was succeeded by the Xbox One S, a smaller, sleeker, cheaper and all around much better machine. The One S has HDR and 4K support, and runs games a little bit smoother. All in all it’s the machine the Xbox One should have been from the start, and will now become the console Microsoft expects to be its holiday best-seller, due to its cheaper price point.

Microsoft’s Xbox One X comes out on November 7, and it packs far more power than the original Xbox One. It’s capable of running 4K games, with the added caveat of being able to downsample 4K games to 1080p, so it’ll still look good on your TV whatever resolution you have. Not every game will utilise the consoles additional power, but there’s around 110+ titles that have been confirmed to receive Xbox One X enhancement at some point.
