Today Microsoft has announced that more people have pre-ordered the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition in five days than any Xbox console ever. According to Microsoft, the Project Scorpio edition saw record-setting, sell-out times and consequently is now out of stock in many countries worldwide. Not bad for a console with no exclusives at launch, eh?

Microsoft’s head of Xbox marketing, Aaron Greenberg, spoke to YouTuber Rocket Beans about the pre-order success, saying that, ‘We sold out at Amazon I think in twenty-five minutes. We expected our total inventory to last about a week and it sold out in less than a day, so… We don’t share the amount of inventory, but the Project Scorpio Edition was for those core fans, the people that used to line up in front of the stores’.

While this is all great news, we don’t really know what it means in real terms. Microsoft hasn’t released any data for Xbox One X pre-order numbers, so we haven’t got anything to work with. For all we know it could have been five consoles or 500,000 consoles.

Guy Lister, COO of Game Retail, said, ‘Our customers have been eagerly awaiting Xbox One X since the announce of Project Scorpio. This excitement has translated into the demand of pre-orders for the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition.’ Game is probably very relieved at all these half-step console launches, which may actually keep the perpetually struggling retailer afloat.

If you missed out on the opportunity to pre-order your console and you’re now kicking yourself, don’t worry, relax. Microsoft has said that it’ll be announcing details for pre-orders of the Xbox One X standard edition in September. That’s only a week away now.

Microsoft, fresh from all the self-congratulatory back-patting, wanted to thank those who had preordered the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition, saying that, ‘There’s really never been a better time to be an Xbox gamer. YOU made Xbox One X the fastest-selling pre-order in Xbox history. From all of us at Team Xbox, thank you!’

We’ve contacted Microsoft to ask if they will give us any data, but it seems pretty unlikely.
