Both Suda51 and James Gunn have confirmed they won’t be involved in the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw remake.

The two men were major creative forces on the original release of the 2012 cult hit. However, both have now tweeted in the wake of the announcement of the remake confirming they’re not part of it. As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, film director Gunn was first to respond to an article about the endeavour, saying “To answer the question in the article, neither I nor (Suda51) are currently involved in this. I heard it about it for the first time from Suda a couple weeks ago.”

Suda would add to Gunn’s tweet with his own response. “To add my two cents, like (James Gunn) says, neither he nor I am involved in this project at all,” he said.  “And Grasshopper Manufacture has nothing to do with development or anything.”

However, it doesn’t sound like there’s any ill-will between the men and the remake. As Gunn elaborated in a follow-up responding to a fan: “I neither endorse nor condemn it! I simply don’t know anything about it. But as articles are starting to slap our names on there, I think it’s important to make clear no one ever approached us about it.”

Suda51 is credited as the original game’s creative director, while Gunn was a writer for the game. The latter’s Hollywood career took off soon after the release of Lollipop Chainsaw & has since directed Marvel & DC movies a-plenty. Suda51 has stuck around in games & most recently wrote and directed 2021’s No More Heroes 3.

The Lollipop Chainsaw remake, meanwhile, is currently set to arrive next year from original producer Yoshimi Yasuda and his new studio Dragami Games.
