Nintendo has announced a sequel to classic SNES RPG The Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past, due for release on Nintendo 3DS later this year.

The sequel is set in the same game world as the original Link To The Past, and sees Link exploring new dungeons in a brand new storyline.

The visual style is similar to the original, featuring the same top-down camera angle of the first Link to the Past, but in a 3D game world.

Nintendo says that the game has been designed to take advantage of the handheld’s 3D capabilities, and depth will play a key part in the puzzles and world navigation.

Link is now able to ‘become a drawing’ and move within walls, too, allowing him to enter otherwise inaccessible areas.

“What we want to achieve with this new Zelda is to invigorate the flat 2D world of Link To The Past with a sense of height and volume using the three-dimensional display of Nintendo 3DS,” said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata.

“With it, it’s easier to differentiate levels in the environment and we can truly utilise height differences in dungeons as a puzzle-solving mechanic.”

A 3D video demonstrating the game’s 3D mechanics will be available to download from the 3DS eShop this afternoon. For the first screenshots, head through to our screenshot gallery.
