The Last of Us: Part II is in development for PS4, Naughty Dog and Sony announced at PSX over the weekend.

“Let’s cut to the chase,” said Naughty Dog Creative Director, Neil Druckmann. “The sequel to The Last of Us is happening. It’s called The Last of Us Part II and here is the just released announcement trailer.”

Set five years after the first game, Joel and Ellie are back, only now a 19 year-old Ellie is the main playable character.

“If the first game, the theme was the love between these two characters… This story’s the counter of that,” said Druckmann in a panel following PSX. “It’s about hate.”

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Druckmann explained that the sequel nearly never happened.

“Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, it wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey,” he said.

The game’s release is going to be some way off, with the trailer shown at PSX actually originally planned to be premiered at E3 2017.

“It’s still early days for the project–the game’s release is a ways off–but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come,” said Druckmann.

He added: “Expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.”
