The Last Guardian remains “in the mix” at Sony, but don’t expect the game to be released if the platform holder doesn’t believe it to be great, development head for Sony Worldwide Studios America Scott Rohde has told IGN.

“You’re going to be very frustrated by this answer,” Rohde said, “but it is 100 per cent the God’s honest truth, and that is that we want to make great games. And when we see that the public is so interested in a specific game, of course that drives us to want to complete that game. But it also drives us to want to make it great. We would not want to ship that game if we don’t think it’s great.”

As for specifics relating to what platforms the game may be released on, Rohde said he’s “not going to announce what platform it’s coming on, who’s working on it, who’s involved. But that is still a title that’s absolutely in the mix at Worldwide Studios. That’s the most you’re gonna get.”

He added that Sony is “trying to make the best thing we can out of The Last Guardian.”

The Last Guardian was announced back at E3 2009 for PS3.

Sony has been keeping the dream of The Last Guardian alive for years now, with ample opportunity to confirm its cancellation. Should the game not see a release Sony will face a considerable backlash from fans.
