Showtime has announced that Black Mirror's Otto Bathurst will direct the pilot episode of the long-awaited Halo TV series.

In addition, Bathurst will helm multiple episodes of the sci-fi TV show, which is based on Bungie and 343 Industries' multi-million selling first-person shooter franchise. Kyle Killen will assume the role of executive producer, writer, and showrunner.

According to a new blurb, the Halo TV show will  'take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.'

Rupert Wyatt was originally attached to directed the Halo TV series, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Shooting is expected to begin later this year, with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television still backing the project.

Meanwhile, developer 343 Industries is working on the next chapter in the series for Xbox One, the ambitious-sounding Halo Infinite.
