With all the latest news surrounding The Flash movie release, in particular, the movie’s star, Ezra Miller.
Let’s take a look at some of what we know about the movie so far as The Flash is set to be Miller’s first major leading role in a Hollywood production, and what a role it is.
As DC Comics’ Scarlet Speedster is one of the oldest and most recognisable superheroes in comics, especially after the success of the “Arrowverse” Flash TV show starring Grant Gustin.
But a variety of production setbacks including growing controversy around the film’s star have seen the movie left in somewhat of a production limbo.

What will The Flash movie be about?
The movie has gone through several different iterations and stories over the past two decades before finally going in front of cameras on April 19th 2021 helmed by acclaimed Director, Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT Chapter Two).
What little we know of the story is that it is a somewhat adaptation of the Flashpoint comic arc which saw The Flash go back in time to prevent the murder of his mother and in doing so rewrites history.
In the original comics story, this saw sweeping changes to many of the iconic characters of the DC Universe.
Some of these changes included Bruce Wayne/Batman being the one killed in Crime Alley that fateful night in Gotham. Leaving his distraught parents, Thomas and Martha, to become The Batman and Joker respectively of this rewritten timeline.
However, The Flash movie seems to have potentially altered these events instead in order to allow both past and new versions of DC heroes to appear on screen.
As the movie is set to see not one, but two actors playing Batman/Bruce Wayne on screen as Michael Keaton dons the cowl once more to reprise his Batman.
While Ben Affleck, for the first time since Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, once more dons his cowl.
In addition the movie is also set to feature the debut of Superman’s cousin, Supergirl, played by up and coming actress Sasha Calle.
Beyond these cast reveals and implementing elements of The Flashpoint storyline, not much else has been revealed about the movie.
Other than production stills released by Muschietti last year to tease the movie revealing looks at the suit emblems for The Flash, Keaton’s Batman, and Supergirl.
Confirming that both Miller’s Flash and Keaton’s Batman will be wearing updated costumes for the movie.
When and where can I watch The Flash movie?
Warner Bros. Discovery have stated that despite the recent controversies surrounding Miller, the film is still set to release exclusively in cinemas on 23rd June 2023.
In fact, Warner Bros. Discovery’s President and CEO David Zaslav recently stated in a Q2 earnings call on August 4th (as reported by Variety) that:
“We have seen ‘The Flash,’ ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam 2,
We are very excited about them. We’ve seen them. We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”
Which, based on this statement, looks like the movie has Zaslav’s full support and should release as planned next year providing there are no further set backs.
What are the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller?
Truthfully, there have been quite a few shocking reports and allegations that have surfaced about Miller over the course of the last 2 years.
So, before reading any further, please be aware that some of the accounts detailed below could be both distressing and or triggering for anyone who has been a victim of abuse or trauma.
For this reason, I will only give short descriptions of them here along with the links to the related articles which go into greater detail regarding the allegations and incidents against Miller should anyone wish to read further:
March 2022 – The Associated Press report in this article that a couple in Hawaii were granted a temporary restraining order against Miller after they accused Miller of stealing some of their possessions
March 2022 – Then in a further incident in Hawaii, as reported by Hawaii News Now in this article.
Miller was arrested and charged by Hawaii County Police for disorderly conduct and harassment before being released after posting bail.
April 2020 – As reported by Variety in this article, a video was released online showing Miller appearing to choke a woman in a bar in Reykjavik, Iceland.
This is the first of several incidents and allegations that have since been made about Miller’s time residing in Iceland.
June 2022 – This article is released by TMZ based on legal documents they obtained which contain allegations of grooming and abuse made by the parents of a young woman known to be an associate of Miller’s.
June 2022 – The Daily Beast release this interview with a woman who along with her young child were granted an order of protection against Miller following an incident in their family home.
June 2022 – Rolling Stone release this article wherein their sources allege that Miller was housing three young children and their mother in unsafe conditions at Miller’s Vermont farm.
June 2022 – Variety release this article detailing accusations from a woman alleging Miller of harassing her at her home in Germany in February 2022. Before going into further detail regarding the assault on the Icelandic woman in 2020.
August 2022 – Business Insider posts this subscriber exclusive article alleging that Miller had been driving around the US for six months with a gun and bulletproof vest due to paranoia about the FBI.
The article then further goes on to detail alleged incidents by Miller while filming The Stand in addition to alleged cult behaviour by Miller in their Icelandic home during their residency there.
August 2022 – As reported in this blogpost from the Vermont State Police. Miller is charged with felony burglary into an unoccupied dwelling after probable cause was found linking them to the theft of several bottles of alcohol from the residence.
What Next For Miller?
In a statement released to Variety by a representative of the actor, they state the following:
“Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,”
I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
In this writer’s opinion, I can only hope that Miller is sincere in their statement above and that they do seek help in managing and living with any mental health issues they are experiencing.
Although I would also hope that once they have done this, they would also seek to make reparations for their past actions to those affected by them.
As that would show that they are truly remorseful for the hurt of their actions and that they are indeed seeking to better themselves to prevent such incidents from occurring in future.
