Beating the level 95 Hanged Man to access the endgame of The First Descendant is no small task. While its first phase is effectively a DPS check, the second phase requires careful coordination to succeed. It’s not impossible with randoms but we recommend putting a team together for this fight. YouTuber Grind Hard Squad figured out how its phases work and managed to beat the boss successfully. Here’s how they did it.

How to beat the Hanged Man

Clearing the first phase and the boss’ white shield bar shouldn’t be an issue as long as you focus on its weak points (core, shoulder, sensor). Remember to use poison attacks and stock up on electric resistance modules. The second half of the battle makes some people consider it a near-impossible fight. In short, here’s what Grind Hard Squad does to beat the boss’ final phase:

  • Get a designated runner to pick up the cube before the 8-minute mark.
  • Focus fire on the boss’ exposed mouth before its beam attack and lower the fluid in the vials.
  • Return the cube and continue fighting the boss until the vials’ fluid rises. Repeat until they’re down.

If these red gauge indicators fill up at around the 8-minute mark (as verified by LeyzarGamingViews), an instant-kill attack happens and you fail the mission. At around 8:15, ask the team runner to grab the cube at the vial structure to delay this wipe. But this triggers the Hanged Man’s frenzied state. Protect the runner from weaker enemy mobs as they’re slowed and can’t use their abilities while carrying the cube.

Once the boss is frenzied, it becomes immune to damage except when it opens its mouth to charge up a devastating 90-degree cone attack. Focus fire and destroy this exposed part before the attack. Destroying this part as the cube is being held will drain the red vial fluid by a small amount. Do it twice and then return the cube to the structure. You can then resume the fight against its standard health bar. You’ll need to shuffle between the boss’ frenzied and normal phases to take them down.

This can be a chore to figure out without a walkthrough, with Reddit threads expressing mixed opinions over the boss fight. User Orlha calls out its “stupidly tiny hitbox” while Ok-Object7409 consider it the “only interesting and unique boss with really cool mechanics and animations.” We think they’re a neat addition that doesn’t rely on pure damage to defeat. If you drop the cube or fail to take down the boss’ weak spot before the breath attack, things can get frustrating. Get a team together and adopt Grind Hard Squad’s surefire method to clear this electric menace.
