The Elder Scrolls VI is currently in the 'pre-production' phase, Bethesda's Todd Howard revealed during a chinwag on the YouTube E3 Coliseum event.

Speaking with host Geoff Keighley, Howard also confirmed that the sci-fi epic Starfield, which was shown for the first time at Bethesda's E3 showcase, is in full production.

'Starfield is playable, Elder Scrolls VI, not in that way,' he said.

Interestingly, Howard seemed to indicate that The Elder Scrolls VI might be a next-generation game.

Keighley noted that a few years back, Howard was asked about Elder Scrolls VI and replied that 'the technology wasn't there yet for the game they wanted to build.'

But is that technology there now, Keighley asked? 'It's getting closer,' replied Howard.

By the sounds of it, The Elder Scrolls VI still a long ways off and will probably not come out until after Starfield given that it's not even in full production yet.
