The Elder Scrolls Online has finally been confirmed, putting an end up much rumour and speculation.

Game Informer, which has secured yet another major exclusive, reports that the game is in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and promises to merge the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is loved for with the scale and social aspects of am MMO.

The game takes places a millennium before the events of Skyrim, with daedric prince Molag Bal attempting to drag all of Tamriel into his realm.

“It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years,” said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor. “The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

Game Informer will also be revealing details on solo questing and public dungeons, plus a peek at PvP which sees three player factions fighting in open-world setting over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor’s throne.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled for release in 2013 on PC and Mac.
