Fntastic, the developer responsible for creating the notorious not-an-MMO The Day Before, has shockingly closed down, citing financial difficulties as the reason for their shuttering. According to a statement released by the studio, all income they receive “is being used to pay off debts to our partners” and that they “lack the funds to continue.” It’s currently unclear what the future of The Day Before and Propnight is as of writing, though Fntastic did note that servers would remain operational for now.

Fntastic’s official statement added: “We invested all our efforts, resources, and man-hours into the development of The Day Before, which was our first huge game. We really wanted to release new patches to reveal the full potential of the game, but unfortunately, we don’t have the funding to continue the work.”

“It’s important to note that we didn’t take any money from the public during the development of The Day Before; there were no pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns,” they continued. “We worked tirelessly for five years, pouring our blood, sweat, and tears into the game.” Fntastic then ended its announcement with a timeline of the studio’s significant milestones, including its inception in 2015 and the subsequent releases of its games in 2017, 2018, 2021, and, finally, 2023 with The Day Before. Fntastic has since updated its official website with a graphic of the same statement.

Despite the shocking news, writing had seemingly been on the wall for Fntastic after The Day Before was ripped to shreds upon release, with thousands of players asking for refunds and posting scathingly negative reviews on the game’s Steam page. Outrage towards the misleading post-apocalyptic shoot ’em up had also begun to rise following the discovery of the Press Armor, an in-game item with the description: “Sure, you can hope for some sympathy in it, but to be honest, no one likes journalists.”
