The Darkness II, the sequel to the million unit-selling 2007 FPS, The Darkness, will be released on October 7, 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, 2K Games has announced.

Developed by Digital Extremes, The Darkness II promises to break free from the conventional first-person shooter mould with uniquely stylised gameplay.

The quad-wielding gameplay empowers players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies using Demon Arms, while simultaneously firing two weapons.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Estacado crime family, used Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. Jackie continues to have haunting visions of his beloved Jenny since her death. He’s tried to cope by bottling up his supernatural power, and now Darkness wants out.

A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has been orchestrated by some outside force. This botched attempt opens the door for Darkness to re-emerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to Hell and worse.

An October 7 launch positions The Darkness II between two real blockbusters: Gears of War 3 and Batman: Arkham City. The Early October date is also likely to see competition from both FIFA 12 and PES 2012.

It was the October launch period which saw both Konami’s Castlevania and Namco Bandai’s Enslaved fall way short of sales targets. 2K will be hoping the same won’t happen to its FPS sequel.
